If you have to store furniture for any period of time, you need to put your furniture in a climate-controlled unit. Such a unit will control temperature and humidity in order to avoid damage. On the other hand, the climate is not the only thing that can cause damage to a piece of furniture. Furniture that is not stored properly can sustain damage. Thus, you need to be careful about how you pack your furniture into a storage unit and the materials that you use to protect your furniture from dust and scratching.

Don't Force Furniture

In order to take advantage of the limited space within a storage facility, you may be tempted to stack furniture into tight configurations. The downside to this approach is that you can cause furniture legs to become tangled, and then when you try to remove your furniture, pulling out one piece of furniture can cause the rest to collapse. Furthermore, forcing furniture in a unit can scratch your furniture and negate the investment that you made renting a climate-controlled storage locker to protect it in the first place.

Don't Use Plastic

Dust can leak into your storage locker. Some people will use plastic sheeting to keep the dust off their furniture. The problem with this is that condensation can build up inside the plastic, drip onto your furniture and cause water damage.

Use Blankets or Cloth Furniture Protectors

Covering your furniture with blankets can help in a couple of different ways. For one, blankets will protect your furniture from scratches. Especially if you have to stack furniture in the storage locker or slide them up next to each other, you will want to cover each piece of furniture with its own blanket before putting it close to other pieces of furniture that it could rub against. Also, the blankets will help to keep dust off, but unlike plastic, fabric is breathable and thus will allow water vapor to pass through before it condenses and damages furniture.

Use a Platform

If your furniture is in any sort of a position where it could be exposed to flooding, place planks along the floor of your storage locker to create an elevated platform to put your furniture on.

When you go to websites to rent a storage unit, climate control is a good first move , but when trying to protect your furniture, it is only the first step. In order to keep your furniture safe, you need to take care when packing your unit so that you don't cause damage by your haste.
